Sapper Arthur Hayden Ogden

Royal Marines Engineers

Arthur was born in Sale in 1889.  His parents were Charles Ogden (a salesman of hometrade goods) and his wife Ann.  Arthur was one of four children and the family lived in Holly Bank Grove, Northenden.  Arthur's older brother, Charles Percy Ogden, had a distinguished military career.  Arthur, after completing his secondary education in 1907, went to Manchester University and graduated in 1910 with a BSc in electrical engineering. After leaving University he was employed by Lanes Dynamo Company in Trafford Park.

In September 1914 Arthur enlisted in the Divisional Signal Company of the Royal Marines and after completing his training at Deal, Kent was posted to Gallipoli.

It is likely Arthur was severely wounded in the third Battle for Krithia Village. He died in a Field Hospital on 18 June from a shrapnel wound to the head; he was 26. There is added sadness to his death in that the day before he died, his parents received a letter from him saying he was well.

Arthur is buried in Skew Bridge Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey and commemorated on our                              War Memorial at St. John’s.
